What Is Emotionally Focused Therapy Supervision?

EFT Supervision is a collaborative process where you receive individualized support and feedback on your use of Emotionally Focused Therapy with couples. Grounded in the science of adult attachment, EFT is a structured, experiential model designed to help partners identify negative patterns and rebuild emotional connection.

In supervision, we focus on:

  • Applying the EFT model and its stages with precision and flexibility

  • Strengthening your use of self as therapist

  • Enhancing your attunement, pacing, and presence

  • Building confidence with escalated couples and emotional cycles

  • Developing case conceptualization grounded in attachment theory

  • Preparing for EFT certification (if applicable)

Who is EFT Supervision for?

EFT supervision is for therapists who want more than just technical skills—they want connection, insight, and support in their professional journey.

If you’re currently working toward EFT certification, I’ll help you stay grounded and focused as you move through the model’s stages, steps and Tango and help you prepare your materials. You’ll receive supervision that aligns with ICEEFT’s requirements, but also honors your own growth process.

If you’re feeling unsure or overwhelmed by difficult couples dynamics, supervision can give you fresh perspective and practical tools to help you get unstuck. We’ll explore the cycle, deepen your interventions, and build your confidence session by session.

What can EFT Supervision help with?

If you’re newer to EFT and wondering where to begin, you’re in the right place. I love working with therapists who are curious and eager to learn. I’ll meet you where you are, and together we’ll build a solid foundation in the model.

And if you’re craving personalized, nonjudgmental feedback on your work, you’ll find this space supportive and encouraging. You don’t have to do it perfectly—you just have to show up with a willingness to grow.

Finally, if you want to feel more grounded in your use of attachment theory and learn to lead couples through change with more clarity and presence, this space will help you do just that.

Individual supervision can significantly boost an individual's confidence by offering a structured and supportive environment for personalized feedback, goal setting, skill development, and self-awareness.

  • Not at all. Supervision is open to all experience levels—from EFT beginners to seasoned therapists.

  • Yes. As long as you’re working with a certified EFT supervisor, which I am, hours count toward certification through ICEEFT.

  • Definitely. Reviewing video (with client consent) is one of the most powerful tools for growth, and we’ll approach this in a supportive and constructive way.

  • That depends on your needs and schedule. Many therapists find biweekly sessions to be the sweet spot, but we can meet weekly, monthly, or somewhere in between. We’ll co-create a rhythm that feels sustainable and supportive for you.

  • This is a great question. It can take a couple of years for EFT to really get into your bones. One thing is for sure, with practice, support and encouragement you can get there!

  • While you do not need to show video of your work in order to benefit from supervision, it can be more helpful so that we can see what is happening between you and your couples. This is probably the best way to do supervision and how to get the most from our supervision time together.

  • This is a common response for therapists who are not 100% comfortable working with emotion. I would say slow yourself down and notice your own blocks and then stay with the emotion. You can do this!

What to Expect in Emotionally Focused Therapy Couples Supervision

Each supervision session is completely tailored to you—your needs, your learning style, and your goals.

We’ll look at your real couples work together, and when possible, review recordings of your sessions. This can be such a powerful part of supervision. You’ll receive clear, compassionate feedback that highlights both your strengths and your opportunities for growth—never harsh, always constructive.

I love using experiential tools in supervision. Whether it’s role plays, therapist parts work, or walking through interventions together, we’ll keep things dynamic and connected to the real-life challenges you’re facing in the therapy room.

We’ll also spend time on case conceptualization, using the EFT lens to understand what’s happening beneath the surface in your couples. You’ll learn how to track the cycle, identify key emotion markers, and move clients forward with intention.

If you ever find yourself activated or stuck in your own emotional responses as a therapist, supervision is a safe place to explore that. We all hit those moments. I’ll support you in reflecting on what’s coming up and how to stay present and regulated with your clients.

And most importantly, I’ll be here to celebrate your growth, help you reconnect with your strengths, and provide the tools and perspective to keep your work moving forward—even when it feels hard.

"Attachment isn’t just a theory I teach — it’s the foundation I stand on, as a therapist, supervisor, and human being."
